Recycling…

Now that we know more about what recycling is and what some common items to recycle are, let’s dive into why it’s important to recycle and how you can implement your own recycling program.

Why is it important?

Adding waste to landfills isn’t helping the environment. Chemicals and gases can be released from waste decomposing. By recycling, not only can we reduce the amount of waste, but it helps cut down on the raw materials used around the world, further helping preserve the environment.

How can I help?

Reusing items is a great way to prevent having to toss them out. Here are some examples of how you can reuse common items:

  • Glass Jars and Plastic Containers – clean and reuse to organize and store items (i.e leftover foods, pantry items, plant herbs for a kitchen herb garden)
  • Purchase recyclable materials (reducing the need for new raw materials)
  • Recycle all kinds of materials – cars, fabric, etc. Not just paper, plastic and glass!
  • Compost food waste
  • Donate items – instead of throwing things away that will end up in the landfill, check with local charities to see if they would accept the items.
  • Plant a tree – just another way to help the environment!

How to implement a program?

Starting to recycle or implementing a recycling program doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these steps and you can be on your way to doing your part to reduce waste!

  • Recyclable materials vary from town to town, so research what types of materials you can recycle. Post a list of common items that can be recycled throughout your office to inform employees and keep recycling front of mind.
  • Educate family or employees about the importance of recycling to help get everyone involved!
  • Determine what size containers are needed. Use refillable containers to collect the materials (i.e. Container for paper, container for glass/plastic). Make sure containers are centrally located so they are used effectively.
  • Arrange for materials pickup from a local agency or janitorial company. If those services aren’t offered in your area try to organize with family/employees to drop off at a local facility.
