What is it?

Most everyone is familiar or has heard of recycling before. However, do you really understand what it is? Defined by Webster’s Dictionary, recycling is to “reuse or make (a substance) available for reuse for biological activities through natural processes of biochemical degradation or modification.” Simply, recycling is taking a material and making it ready for reuse. Typically recycling involves converting waste materials into new usable materials and objects.

Why recycle?

Not only does recycling reduce the amount of waste in landfills and saves energy, there are many other positive reasons to recycle. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, here are more reasons to consider recycling:

  • Conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals.
  • Increases economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials.
  • Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials.
  • Helps create jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States.

What can you recycle?

Particular materials that can be recycled may vary depending on where you live, so be sure to check with the city or town you are recycling in. Common recyclable materials are:

  • Paper
  • Plastics
  • Glass
  • Cardboard
  • Food and Drink Cans
  • Jars
  • Jugs
